Presidential Searches Underway at Four Public Higher Education Institutions

September 30—Hundreds of campus delegates from Massachusetts' 29 public colleges and universities gathered today to chart a new course for aspiration and accountability in the public higher education system. College presidents and university chancellors gathered at a conference in Marlborough, MA to signal their growing support for the Vision Project,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a new plan to position Massachusetts for national leadership in post-secondary learning.

February 3—The Davis Educational Foundation has awarded a $268,000 grant to the Department of Higher Education to further the work of the Vision Project in the area of learning outcomes assessment. In the award letter to the DHE, the Foundation’s interim Board chair commented, “We view the (Vision Project) initiative as exciting, ambitious and offering tremendous potential to students and campuses.”

$125,000 Boston Foundation Grant Supports the Vision Project

January 3—Massachusetts student veterans attending the state’s public colleges and universities will continue to have their tuition and mandatory fees paid in full, while students at private colleges and universities may realize a modest increase in benefits under the terms of the Post-9/11 Veterans Education Assistance Improvement Act of 2010 signed into law by President Obama today.
December 7—Board of Higher Education meets, approves FY12 Budget Request on behalf of the Department, the nine state universities, and the 15 community colleges; also hears presentations on data and planning around the college participation outcome of the Vision Project

January 26—Governor Patrick today submitted his proposal for the Commonwealth’s FY2012 budget. It now moves to the House Ways and Means Committee, which will submit its version of the FY2012 budget in the coming weeks. Among the Governor’s FY2012 proposals for higher education: Level funding of public higher education campus budgets, minus federal stimulus dollars that have been in place since FY2010.

DHE’s Office of Student Financial Assistance is spreading the word about Massachusetts’ scholarship and grant programs with media outreach and a new State Financial Aid brochure timed for release in February, which is National Financial Aid Awareness Month.
Presidential searches are underway at four Massachusetts public higher education institutions following the retirement announcements of Jack M. Wilson of the University of Massachusetts, David Hartleb of Northern Essex Community College, Janelle Ashley of Worcester State University, and, most recently, Katherine Sloan of Massachusetts College of Art and Design.

Governor Patrick Submits FY12 Budget, Spares Higher Education From Major Cuts

January 18—The Massachusetts Department of Higher Education will use a $125,000 grant from The Boston Foundation to support the collection and rigorous analysis of data for the Vision Project, Massachusetts’ new public agenda to move the state’s 29 college and university campuses into the top tier of public higher education institutions in the United States.
